Ballstaedt<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\" align=\"LEFT\">Every legal claim a party can bring in court has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.racinelaw.net\/statute-of-limitations-for-civil-lawsuits\/\">statute of limitations<\/a>, a period of time in which the claim must be brought. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Statute_of_limitations\">purpose and effect<\/a> of statutes of limitations is to protect defendants\u2014people who can be sued.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\" align=\"LEFT\">In rare circumstances, even after a statute of limitations has run and a party has lost its rights to sue, the other party can revive the claim. This can occur, for example, with contract claims. Under Idaho law, the statute of limitations for <a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.idaho.gov\/statutesrules\/idstat\/title5\/t5ch2\/sect5-216\/\">written contracts<\/a> is five years, and for oral contracts, it is four years. However, if a party to a contract makes a written and signed &#8220;acknowledgment&#8221; or makes a payment of principal or interest on the contract, the other party\u2019s right to sue under the contract is <a href=\"https:\/\/legislature.idaho.gov\/statutesrules\/idstat\/title5\/t5ch2\/sect5-238\/\">renewed<\/a>.
