Ballstaedt<\/a><\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\" align=\"LEFT\">Recent immigration enforcement raids have received considerable attention. These raids, which picked up more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2017\/02\/13\/statement-secretary-kelly-recent-ice-enforcement-actions\">680 people<\/a>, were conducted between February 6 and February 10 in the Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and other areas. According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), this action was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/10\/us\/immigration-raids-enforcement.html\">routine immigration enforcement<\/a> that did not represent an increase in tempo. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/news\/2017\/02\/13\/statement-secretary-kelly-recent-ice-enforcement-actions\">agreed<\/a>, stating: &#8220;ICE conducts these kind of targeted enforcement operations regularly and has for many years.&#8221; President Trump, on the other hand, suggested otherwise, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/830741932099960834\">tweeting<\/a>: &#8220;The crackdown on illegal criminals is merely the keeping of my campaign promise. Gang members, drug dealers &amp; others are being removed!&#8221; Immigrant-rights activists had named President Obama the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2014\/04\/30\/is-obama-really-the-deporter-in-chief-yes-and-no.html\">Deporter-in-Chief<\/a>&#8221; because of the millions he deported. However, it seems President Trump is attempting to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/articles\/2017\/02\/14\/is-trump-immigration-crackdown-worse-than-deporter-in-chief-obama.html\">outdo Obama<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"LTR\" align=\"LEFT\">Is this routine action or an increased crackdown? The DHS emphasized that the majority (75%) of detained individuals were criminal aliens, convicted of crimes including homicide, aggravated sexual abuse, sexual assault of a minor, and DUI. However, the raids also captured immigrants <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/federal-agents-conduct-sweeping-immigration-enforcement-raids-in-at-least-6-states\/2017\/02\/10\/4b9f443a-efc8-11e6-b4ff-ac2cf509efe5_story.html?utm_term=.f058e71468a1#a-4814cb3a-61af-4e22-909c-6e55b92c93a2\">without criminal records<\/a>. Some immigration attorneys agree that this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/02\/10\/us\/immigration-raids-enforcement.html\">ICE action is &#8220;new&#8221;<\/a> and that deportation priorities have changed.
